Automotive Engineer magazine asked designers of Lotus to elaborate on their project, which was presented recently. The initiative was taken by the headquarters of Lotus company, and as they say it all started with a proposal for a compact urban electric car, the main feature of which is a modular aluminum structure. To develop such a project the Lotus company needed only two weeks – and in the end the project has a really good car which is ready to be launched. No one doubted the abilities of the Lotus developers.

The designers team consisted of chief designer Russell Carr, Technical Director Simon Wood and designer Richard Rackham – they presented 2 weeks set of sketches and schematic layout for engineers to work – that’s about 10% of the conceptual phase, in a real project. Skits presented by one of today’s designers Lotus – Barney Hatz.

The result is great – a car that is almost 10 inches shorter than the Smart ForTwo and accommodates 4 adults. Lotus City Car is equipped with sliding doors and a 37 kilowatt electric motor, powered by two units, each of which consists of four lithium-ion batteries. A full charge will last for one block of 50 kilometers, and the second can be used for additional purposes – in the winter for heating or to make the 50 kmthe car can run on another battery unit.
