Lotus Seven: Happy Model of Colin Chapman

A sports car does not have to be powerful and expensive. Even a very accessible model can be done very quickly, and it was proved by the eminent British designer Colin Chapman. He created the famous Lotus Seven, which has become a real cult and has created a whole new class of vehicles. Young Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman was a keen amateur club racer.

His first creation was MKI, Chapman collected it from parts of the old Austin 7 in 1948 in his garage. Designer sold a few models, and in 1952 registered a company Lotus Engineering Company. Particularly successful was the new Lotus MKVI, established under the slogan of Colin Chapman – “Dynamics due to low weight.”

Lotus Seven has become so popular that it has many followers in other countries. Trying to keep up with Seven, there were created about 160 different models. For example, in Switzerland – Hauser, Japan – Mitsuoka, UK – Westfield, Spain – Aznom. Power of some of them is more than 300 hp. A Dutch company Donkevoort created a coupe D8 GT with up doors basing on Seven. Dynamics at the level of the best sports models: the 2.0-liter 280-horsepower turbo coupe accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and reaches 240 km/h. Established in 1957, Lotus Seven continues to live and develop, even half a century later. It was not withdrawn from the production, and its twins exist in many countries of the world.
